The Secondary Education Examination results 2023 showed more than half (52%) failed to secure a Grade Point Average (GPA) 1.60 or above; a threshold level to study higher level. Subjects like Mathematics, English, and Science have the highest failure rates, with Mathematics alone accounting for nearly 40% of students failing to meet the pass criteria. The performance in math in Nepal is a critical factor in shaping the educational and professional prospects of students. Strong performance in math opens doors to a brighter future, enabling students to pursue their future dream job in various fields. However, achieving excellence in math requires effective teaching, access to resources, and a robust support system.
Despite its importance, the math education program in Nepal faces significant challenges. There is a shortage of qualified educators, with limited incentives for those seeking mathematics teacher jobs. The average mathematics teacher salary often fails to attract highly skilled professionals. Many students struggle to improve mathematics skills due to outdated innovative teaching methods and lack of access to math education programs. These issues lead to low confidence, directly affecting confidence in their abilities. Additionally, students often wonder how to improve mathematics, yet they lack opportunities to engage in activities that develop the skills to improve mathematic proficiency. This gap impacts their ability to explore job opportunities, local or part-time job opportunities, further limiting their potential.

Solution: Teaching Strategies for Teachers, Math Games, and Math Problem Solving

Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches.

  1. HEAL Group focuses on initiatives to improve mathematics education in Nepal. We provide support in coaching every Saturday for 9th and 10th class students of 12 secondary schools of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality. By promoting consistent practice, HEAL emphasizes that practice builds confidence. Their efforts ensure a path to a brighter future, enabling youth to fulfill their dream in math-related fields. This includes incorporating math games, math fun games, and math you can see to make math lessons more engaging.
  2. HEAL Group will provide orientation to the math teachers. Math teacher orientation is a program that helps teachers become confident and capable in teaching math. It can include discussions on the goals of teaching math, teaching strategies for teachers, and how to apply math concepts to real life, including math problem solving. This will include sharing effective teaching skills and teaching strategies focusing into math.
  3. We provide teaching materials. Teaching math to students takes a lot of patience and time. However, technology has made it easier with various math teacher In addition, technology provides so many tools to teachers that they can use to make learning fun for students, such as math games, role playing activities, and math worksheets. This also includes ways to help math become more accessible for both teachers and students.
