Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a leading cause of death and disability in Nepal. In 2019, NCDs accounted for 71.1% of deaths in Nepal, up from 31.3% in 1990. NCDs are projected to account for 78.64% of deaths in 2040. Factors like unhealthy lifestyles, globalization, and economic transitions contribute to this trend. A prevalence study of selected NCDs in Nepal shows 12% COPD, 8.5% diabetes, 6% chronic kidney diseases, and 3% coronary artery diseases among the population aged 20 years and above. Treatment and management of NCDs in low-resource countries like Nepal remain a challenge, especially with the alarming lifestyle trends: 24% are overweight, 17% engage in smoking, 11% have high cholesterol, 8% lack Physical Activity, and 7% consume alcohol. Shockingly, 73.5% of the population aged 15-69 is unaware of their increased blood sugar levels, while 14.7% experience uncontrolled blood sugar levels despite treatment. These challenges contribute to increased blood pressure, hyper tension, pressure hypertension, and the risk of heart failure. High blood pressure monitoring is crucial, yet access and awareness are limited.
HEAL Group understands “Knowledge is power”. In Nepal, health mothers’ groups are the heart of family health and well-being. Health Mothers’ Groups (HMGs) are led by Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) who promote maternal and child health, safe motherhood, nutrition, family planning, and other topics. By promoting widespread awareness through orientation to mothers’ group members on non-communicable diseases, we can encourage healthy lifestyles, including Physical Activity, Eat less Move More and healthy eating habits. Engaging local communities in physical activities and wellness initiatives, and providing counseling on nutritious food (eat simple food) are all essential parts of the solution. This includes promoting a diet for heart disease and a cardiovascular health diet to address issues like increased blood pressure and hyper tension. We must also address health promotion and diabetes and provide diabetes preventive care.
HEAL Group’s awareness programs empower communities to combat non-communicable diseases in Nepal by promoting healthy diets, Physical Activity, and informed lifestyle choices. By educating mothers’ groups, HEAL Group fosters grassroots change, reducing NCD risks, and improving community health care, including cardiovascular health. This initiative paves the way for a healthier, more resilient population and future. Donate Now to support our efforts in promoting cardiovascular health, diabetes preventive care, and overall community well-being.
