Summary:

Malnutrition, in all its forms, including under-nutrition (wasting, stunting, and underweight), inadequate vitamins or micro nutrients, overweight, obesity, and resulting diet-related non-communicable diseases, presents a crisis. Globally, under-nutrition is a leading cause of death for children under five, especially in developing countries. In Nepal, half of all children under five are under-nourished, leading to stunting, illness, and developmental delays, causing 50,000 deaths annually. Our program directly confronts this deadly crisis in Nepal by restoring children’s health through empowering mothers with essential education on childcare, personal hygiene & sanitation, and nutrition. This vital work is possible by the generous support of our donors. The alternative is a catastrophe.

Challenge:

Globally, malnutrition claims the lives of countless young children. Malnutrition, in all its forms, includes under-nutrition (wasting, stunting, and underweight), inadequate vitamins or minerals, overweight, obesity, and resulting diet-related non-communicable diseases. Globally, under-nutrition is a leading cause of death for children under five, especially in developing countries. Nearly half of deaths among children under 5 years of age are linked to under-nutrition. These mostly occur in low- and middle-income countries. This dangerous crisis is largely driven by limited nutrition awareness, poor hygiene, and a lack of maternal knowledge about healthy eating and breastfeeding. The good news is, this is addressable. By creating awareness about a well balanced diet among mothers and households, we can save lives and build healthier futures. This is where you can make impact on the world, and prevent much suffering. This is a warning, and we cannot be blinded to the truth.

Our program tackles child malnutrition by empowering communities, focusing on public health nutrition, nutritional guidance, and improved clean water and sanitation.

Solution:

Our program tackles child malnutrition by empowering mothers and pregnant women, focusing on:

  1. Empowering mothers to use Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) for early malnutrition screening, ensuring timely referrals and connecting children with the care they need. During training, Nutritionists teach mothers to prepare balanced diet nutritional foods using only locally produced ingredients and feed their children. This training not only ensures that the children stay healthy but the entire family’s nutrition benefits from the mother. The mothers will also be empowered to prevent malnutrition with the knowledge to eat a healthy food and well balanced diet including fruits/vegetables, plenty of starchy food, calcium rich food and protein rich food. They will receive nutritional guidance to avoid pitfalls.
  2. Poor water and sanitation, and hand hygiene practices contribute to child malnutrition by increasing the risk of diarrhea and intestinal infections. These conditions can compromise a child’s ability to absorb and use nutrients. Through WASH Experts, training to the mothers will be provided on hygiene including hand wash at family level as a result improves the health of children and contribute to a clean and healthy learning environment. We will also focus on drinking water treatment and encourage the use of antibacterial soaps and hand soaps. We promote wash your hands and drink clean water to avoid toxic environments.
  3. Nutrition volunteers will contribute to vital child nutrition programs specially developing protocols, training guidelines, supporting in fund raising and digital marketing! The volunteer will work as global collaborators. This is an opportunity for humanitarian volunteer work and remote volunteer opportunities. We are looking for people to volunteer with us. This is a chance for virtual volunteering. There are too many vulnerable children.

Breaking the cycle involves working across various programs, not just nutrition programs, but also health, education, water and sanitation, livelihoods and protection, all contributing to healthy well being. We must stop this plague.

Long-Term Impact:

Our innovative and low-cost programs stop children dying from malnutrition, having lifelong disabilities (physical and mental) and reduce the prevalence of sickness and poverty. We can avoid a devastating outcome.

Investing in early childhood nutrition is an investment in their future, enabling them to thrive and reach their full potential. If we can use these programs everywhere in Nepal, we can help many more children. The alternative is painful.
